| THE MARYLAND INDEPENDENCE (docked in Baltimore)
Built in 1944 in Weymouth, Nova Scotia, the 112' vessel was designed to chase submarines during World War II. It later served as a patrol boat in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and was converted into a motor yacht in the 1980s. The State of Maryland bought the boat in 1986 and kept it docked in Annapolis, where it was the site of frequent political receptions and other festivities. Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer, along with other top government officials, got a first-class view of the state's watery byways from the rear salon and the spacious sundeck for years before Governor Erlich urged the state to sell the boat because it was excess state property. Now you can charter this beautifully remodeled yacht and brag to your friends that you went cruising on the former Governor of Maryland's yacht.
